Himeji Castle, Japan Himeji, a castle in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, was originally built in the mid-14th century and its design is an attempt to combine strength with elegance. The building is made of wood coated with white plaster. The moat and high curtain walls provided strong defences, but there were also carefully planned living quarters within the walls, including a hall and a chapel. The castle was damaged in the 17th century during the English Civil War, but was restored in the early 20th century and bequeathed to the nation by Lord Curzon, a notable British statesman.
