I bought this keysoft keyboard to control mac I have under my TV which I use as a media centre. I wanted something small, but not too small to be fiddly, that is aesthetically pleasing as it will be lying around the living room, and easy to use from a hand held position at a distance from the mac i.e. With an integrated mouse or tracker ball.
I personally do not like the big black plasticky style of so many other keyboards - possibly as a mac user I am spoilt by the beautiful slim mac keyboards. This keysonic keyboard meets all these criteria. It has a tasteful (IMO) brushed metal surface, it feels weighty and solid, and is compact but not too small. It is also slim and well put together - there are no plastic creaks when you pick it up.
The track ball is on the right and the mouse buttons on the left - which works well. I have tried another keyboard with the mouse buttons on the same side as the track ball. It was impossible to use as one finger was needed to move the ball and another to select a mouse button.
Try select and drag! The keysonic by contrast is a dream to use while sitting on the sofa. I was originally put off by the negative reviews, but then I looked closely at the keyboard image and realised it is identical to my Dell Zino multi media keyboard - and I mean completely identical, with the exception of the keysoft logo instead of Dell. I have had the Dell Zino for some time and it is a great little device. I would have bought another except they seem to be impossible to get in QWERTY now.
And reading the reviews more carefully I saw that the negative ones were older and it seems the keyboard has been comprehensively revised since then. New reviews were much more complimentary. It comes with a Bluetooth dongle, which is needed with the Mac. I have tried using the Mac native Bluetooth but could not get that to connect. The dongle works fine, though from time to time (every week or so, or less frequently) the connection might drop. The answer is just to disconnect and reconnect the dongle. I dont know if this is a problem with non mac users, but keysoft helpfully supply a short usb extension cable so the dongle can be plugged into that and then is easily accessible instead of having to fiddle around the back of a computer.
The one difference I have noticed with the Zino is that the trackball is slightly looser, but this may just be on my model, and it is not a probelm. I like it because it hits the sweetspot between compactness and being big enough to type comfortably. Beware though I'm only a two fingered typist so it may be indadequate for professionals. The batteries last a very long time and it works happily with rechargeable AAAs. Range is Ok and the nano usb receiver is very neat and won't interfere with usb devices in neighbouring slots.
The ball mouse is not suitable for serious work. I always used a neat wired mouse alongside when working on a desk. It really is only useful when you are holding the keyboard for electing stuff on, say, XBMC from the settee.
You won't want the trouble of a seperate mouse for that. I have the updated version, apparently released in 2011. Ignore the negative reviews of the previous version, this one works fine. Very stylish, in a minimal way (no annoying LEDs and extra keys to get in the way). Feels solid, and nicer to type on than my laptop. I had to use the supplied USB extension to get the range I need (apparently metal boxes can interfere with the signal). Using the extension it works perfectly.
The trackball works best for me with the slowest pointer speed (set in the mouse control panel). When holding down the function button, the wheel acts as a scroll wheel - again, I set it to the slowest speed.
I would definitely recommend it for use with a home theatre setup. But not for doing serious mousework, eg drawing - that's not what it's for.
