Srivathsa I'm using Kalyway 10.5.2 on the same mobo as yours: Asustek M2NPV-VM but the LAN ctrl isn't working properly. Mac OS X can identify the network card from the GUI but displays 'no wire connected', which is obviously not the case! In other words, it can see the card during bootup but disables it immediately at the h/w level when the 'forcedeth' driver is being loaded: the only method to 'recover' the LAN at the h/w level is to switch off the PC completely. Otherwise, the led won't switch back on again, how weird!!! I've tried 2 different mobo (identical but with different BIOS versions), but still no luck:-(( When you say you are using the 'nforcethernetcontroller', do you mean the 'forcedeth' kext? If not, which one please? How do you enable it?

No - There is a cursor video glitch that seems common that mostly crops up under Firefox. There are various options for the 950 integrated graphics floating about on the net but all I tried caused worse side effects (ie locked down graphics resolutions and/or CI/QE not working etc) so I stopped bothering about it. I am planning to try a Radeon 1950 in the machine soon anyway.

I have patched the SMBIOS to AppleSMBIOS-27 from since there are reports CS3 won't work with some SMBIOSes. This one for me works great (though my memory speed is reported as 0MHz) and when I migrated my account from my Mini CS3 worked fine. It also has a tidier Hardware Overview in System Profiler than the one in Kalaway I think. SATA/IDE working: Both work fine - boot off SATA, use PATA for storage drives.

By Dominique Gerald M. Cimafranca Even as all eyes are on the 17-inch MacBook Pro that's the grand prize in eyp's User-Friendly campaign, we know that there will only be one extremely lucky winner. Not to worry, though—the next eight runners-up will still walk away with laptops of their own. Three second-place winners for the User-Friendly promo will each get a Toshiba Portege M600-E347, a laptop that's ostensibly built for the business user. Toshiba, we all know, is a big name in quality household appliances, but it's also a respected name in mobile computing, and has been so for a long while.

Portege is Toshiba's line for ultra-portable business laptops. The laptops in this family were designed to be thin and light, ideal for mobile executives and frequent travelers. (Briefly, the other Toshiba laptop lines are: Satellite, desktop replacement laptops for general use; Satellite Pro, for mobile home/office workers and students; Tecra, for large corporate deployments; and Qosimo, for portable gaming.) The physical dimensions of the M600 fit within these specifications: its screen size is 13.3” across, it's just about an inch thick, and it weighs in at under 2kg. Its glossy pearl-white chassis, offset by black trim, adds a touch of professional class to its overall design. Internally, the M600 is pretty solid.

It uses Intel Core 2 Duo processors, has 1GB DDR2 memory, a SuperMulti Double Layer DVD drive, and 160GB SATA hard disk. It's worth noting that the M600's hard disk has shock-absorbing technology, giving it a fair bit more reliability out on the field. For graphics, the M600 uses an integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. This lets it use up to 358MB of shared VRAM. It's serviceable for regular office use, DVD playback, and the casual game.

With this graphic card, though, don't expect to be playing any 3D action shooter games on this machine. Rounding out the M600's hardware features are a wi-fi and Gigabit ethernet, Bluetooth, 5-in-1 card reader, a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera, and Fingerprint Security Suite. With the exception of the fingerprint reader, all these are already stock components in most business laptops. The fingerprint reader permits biometric log-ons to the machine, though in the long term, this may be more novelty than anything else. The M600 comes preloaded with Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and a suite of support software from Toshiba. Overall, the M600 is positioned more as a no-nonsense business laptop than anything else. Its construction is solid, even if its internals are unspectacular.

It should give two to three years of service life, backed by a three-year International Limited Warranty for parts and labor. (Most notebooks nowadays only give a one-year limited warranty.) The street price of the Toshiba Portege M600-E347 is PhP89,900.
