ANN ARBOR - Former Eastern Michigan University wrestling coach Dave Bolyard has a new home. Michigan's wrestling team announced on Monday that Bolyard, the has been added to head coach Sean Bormet's staff as a volunteer assistant. Bolyard spent the previous four years as the head coach at EMU before the university on March 20 as it looks to stabilize its budget for the 2018 fiscal year. The wrestling program was one of four sports EMU cut to reduce its budget by $2.4 million. 'It has been kind of a long rollercoaster,' Bolyard told MLive.

'Sean reached out to me shortly after things went the way they did at Eastern about the potential of joining their staff. It was a good fit for me and my family. I'm excited for the opportunity.' The Akron, Ohio native guided the Eagles to a third-place finish at the MAC Championships last season and tied a program-record with five NCAA qualifiers, including Sa'Derian Perry, who became the fifth All-American in program history and first since 1999.

Bolyard wrestled at Central Michigan University from 2002-05 before spending two seasons as a graduate assistant with the Chippewas. He spent the next seven seasons as an assistant at EMU. 'Our staff is incredibly excited about Dave,' Bormet said in a Michigan news release. 'He immediately brings a wealth of experience and a wide range of skill sets to our program. I value his passion for wrestling and commitment to develop student-athletes. We are fortunate to have him joining us at Michigan.' Bolyard hopes EMU's decision to eliminate four sports will be reversed, but said he hasn't been following the recent developments surrounding the programs. A lawsuit was filed May 10 in Washtenaw County Circuit Court by Douglas and Mary Willer, both EMU alums, On June 15, by former women's tennis player Marie Mayerova and softball player Ariana Chretien, who claim the university is out of compliance with Title IX because EMU is not providing effective accommodation to female student-athletes. EMU has responded to both lawsuits, claiming it did not violate the Open Meetings Act because eliminating sports programs did not require Board of Regents approval. The university responded in court last week to the federal lawsuit by two former athletes, Reinstating the sports, which is what the athletes are seeking through injunctive relief in the lawsuit, would not be possible, the university responded.

'Anything, I can do to help potentially reinstate that program, I am going to do,' Bolyard said. 'I think that is one of the nice things about it, I'm still here (in the area).' Bolyard and his wife and two young kids live in Saline.

'This is a really good fit for my family,' Bolyard said. 'We think this is a great place to raise a family.'

EMU Shuts Down Wrestling Twitter In a gut punch to the online legacy of the wrestling team since 2011, EMU didn’t just make a final post indicating the team was cut. It shut down the twitter account associated with the EMU Wrestlers. By taking this action this removes some great content the University created over the last 7 years. It also makes it kinda awkward when we get EMU Wrestling reinstated, they will need to track down all that old content and apologize to their student athletes and alumni. Here is one of the last images posted: At this time, the official twitter for EMU swim and dive is still up and running. We anticipated that the posts for the Men’s team would be removed, we’ll see how heartless EMU chooses to be on this topic. EMU, keep the posts up.

This is EMU sports history that can live on in the digital world. Character – Scott Weatherbee – Athletic Director Scott Weatherbee is the Athletic Director at Eastern Michigan since 2016.

His short involvement has tragically enabled him to have very little connection with the legacies built at EMU far before his tenure. Scott was the one crying at the formal announcement. I’m sure it was an emotional moment, but mark my words, if he had any idea the legacy he killed when terminating these teams, he would have quit his $269,000/year salaried job before he shed a tear. Luckily our tax dollars for this public university can afford him plenty of facial tissue to wipe up his tears. It was reported that Scott got a $25,000 bonus if he cut 4 athletic programs. We will be reviewing his contract and verifying this report. Results will be posted.

EDIT: Here is the contract: Scott Weatherbee crying us a river while delivering the news: A news article about Weatherbee’s hiring from the Detroit News. The news post that broke hearts and ruined lives On March 20th, 2018, a day that will now remind me of how Eastern Michigan abandoned it’s athletes, the University announced cutting four teams. The official statement is here: Eastern Michigan University announced today, March 20, that it will reduce its intercollegiate athletic program by four sports, effective at the end of the 2018 spring season. The action is being taken as part of the University’s overall budget restructuring efforts. Affected by the decision are the sports of softball, men’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, and wrestling. With the change EMU, which previously led the MAC with 21 sports, will now have 17 sports (seven men’s sports and 10 women’s sports). This action in no way impacts Eastern’s affiliation with the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
